Especially red-and-white cross quilts. Here are two spectacular red-and-white quilts in the collection of the New England Quilt Museum, designed to support the Red Cross in World War I: http://www.nanettesays.com/2014/12/24/not-something-new/. According to quilter Nanette Zeller, where I found them, they "are believed to have been inspired from a quilt pattern by Clara Washburn Angell published in Modern Priscilla Magazinein 1917." People paid for blocks with their names on it, the quilt would then be raffled, and the substantial money raised - as much as $1000, a fortune back then - would go to the Red Cross. <br />There's also the factor (I tell myself) that these are not relgious because the arms are equal sizes. I am planning to do a blog post on this subject, thank you so much for your kind note and excellent question!Cathy Perlmutterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02366874497046582056noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2144625015076186871.post-25227896675270505122016-05-14T06:23:48.990-07:002016-05-14T06:23:48.990-07:00I love your blog...I love this quilt...but as a Je...I love your blog...I love this quilt...but as a Jewish person I tend to shy away from quilts with crosses! I've been using mostly Superior Bottom Line in the bobbin, it lasts a lot longer than other threads. It takes a while to get used to the power, I usually set my auto speed only to 35 percent.Laura McGrathhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14314349729986876724noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2144625015076186871.post-59598450617636288752016-05-08T09:02:46.154-07:002016-05-08T09:02:46.154-07:00Thanks for the insights, Laura. There is definitely a learning curve on the Tiara - and I'm not wild about the constant oiling (or secure that I'm doing it right) - but it's so powerful and such an improvement over dragging my quilt through a small machine! I've done some large quilts on it, but haven't needed the suspension system. For marking, I have a chalk pencil that has many different colors of chalk to use. Got it at Joann's years ago, sorry I don't remember the brand name. Laura McGrathhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14314349729986876724noreply@blogger.com
