  2. My son's hospital is looking for WASHABLE masks as they must don a new mask before they reenter their IV Prep room. Has your pattern held up to repeated washings? How about breathability?

    1. RJ, My pattern has not been hospital tested - most hospitals asking for masks are specifying the pattern they want volunteer stitchers to use. The pattern that most hospitals I've seen have asked for and endorsed is this one, from the Deaconess hospital chain in IL/IN/KY: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tBg0Os5FWQ&feature=youtu.be. It's also easier and faster than mine. I also have a full page of information with different patterns recommended by different hospitals, at https://gefiltequilt.blogspot.com/p/making-masks-for-covid-19-emergency.html. Hope this is helpful, if you have more questions you can email me at cathy.perlmutter@gmail.com

  3. I found a vintage white 100% cotton sheet in a box that was going to a friend for rug making. It was in good shape and "clean" in appearance. I soaked it in hot water and all-fabric oxygen bleach. It is making great ties. It's a double/full size sheet. I tore the hems off and then tear lengthwise strips. The strips tear clean with little fraying. I fold them in half and run them through my serger, placing a magnetic seam guide on the left side of the foot, trimming away an eighth inch, and yielding perfect ties the width of the presser foot. More elastic, a 288 yd roll is supposed to come Tuesday. I think I am going to be stocked for life.

    1. Brilliant, Sally, thank you for sharing that tip! Yes, I expect to be swimming in elastic any day now - but I placed the order a week ago and it still hasn't come! You'll have no problem finding people seeking elastic donations!

  4. Great tutorial! Thanks! Instead of pins, I've been using small binder clips to make the pleats. Remove when you are sewing of course, but then no holes in the mask!
